"this light does not touch us, does not travel the whole distance, the light that gets lost, gives us the beauty of the world, so much of which is in the color blue.”

By the time Solange Knowles introduced her sister, Beyoncé, to Jonsin, he was already a well-known producer. That didn't stop Beyoncé and her team from doing their homework before embarking upon a collaboration. "It was this whole process," Jonsin recalls. "You had to meet the [artist & repertoire team], had to meet her father. It was almost like a big background check."

Jonsin passed the test, and Beyonce traveled to Miami to hear some of his beats. The first one he played was "Sweet Dreams," a funky ditty he hoped would catch her fancy. Beyonce liked it so much so that she immediately went into the booth and started recording.

"You could tell she's very strong with her convictions and knew what she wanted," says Jonsin. "It was like working with a brand new artist -- somebody that was hungry, super nice, super-kind."

MR: Did you feel like you’d made it when you worked with Beyonce or TI?

JJ: It’s funny because when I worked with Beyonce, I didn’t really have all of these hits. I didn’t have "Lollipop"; I didn’t have "Whatever You Like." That was connected through her sister Solange. She had worked with me and I guess she liked the way I worked. I worked with Michelle Williams and Rico Love and she couldn’t stop talking about me and Rico. I guess Beyonce heard all this good stuff and wanted to get in with me and Rico. When I got in the studio with her it was like “holy shit." I’m sitting in the studio with Beyonce and she was so nice and laid back. It felt like I was in there with one of my homegirls or a friend. She was really super nice. Working with her wasn’t like a superstar thing at all. It was really chill. When she got in that booth, she stayed in that booth working until that record was finished. She’s a real hard worker and I couldn’t believe I was in there working with her. It was like a dream come true. To have the record actually make it on the album. I did a full three or four days with her in Miami and a week in LA.

"for example, If I workd with Beyonce, she is unbelievable artist to work with. she played a role in making the records, she gave us ideas of what direction she wants to go in. we kinda worked togather on writing progression of songs. so it was team ? "

RAP-UP: What else are you working on right now?

Jim Jonsin: There's plenty of people I'm working with. Beyonce! That's something we just got a call the other day to start amping that up. We're gonna get in for a week or two. So, that's something that I'm excited about.

RAP-UP: I know it's early in the process with the Beyonce project? So, you just got the call? You haven't actually done anything yet?

Jim Jonsin: We haven't. We're submitting tracks to her. See if she's digging the direction. And if she does, we're gonna follow that direction. I think she's tryna find sounds that she likes from different producers. There's a couple of us, I guess, she's working with. And then from that, we'll get in and cut songs. But I haven't heard anything yet of where her head's at.

RAP-UP: Do you have any ideas in mind of how to take her to the next level? How do you top the last album?

Jim Jonsin: You know, coming off that album, I'd love to reach a little more -- coming off that "Sweet Dreams" record -- I think I'd like to just take it even more Depeche Mode-ish. You know? Like 80's electro with just some hard drums -- you know? I'd love to go there. Even some sexy midtempos with some front 2 4 2 drums. Big crackin drums. See if she likes that. I'm gonna try some of that.
